Just returned from a great trip to northern Manitoba.

Started off at Tramping on June 19. It was our first time fishing the lake and our inexperience showed in a big way. We struggled to get about 30 fish, but nothing over 25". All fish were caught on plastics and cranks. After talking with Brian from Wekusko Falls Lodge (great guy, btw), we discovered that most guys favored blades and bouncers with live bait (or frozen shiners) over all artificial. Winds were high in the afternoon and caused us much frustration in a rental boat.

June 20-21 we fished on Wekusko and had a fair amount of success, boating over 100 fish each day. We were happy to see various walleye year classes represented and caught eyes to 27.5". The fish of the trip. however, was a hog 42.5" x 24" pike landed by my fishing partner. It was an incredibly heavy fish.

June 22 was a travel day and we headed up to the Lynn Lake area, got our boat and made the trip into the Laurie system. We did manage to get out for a few hours that night and landed about 40 lake trout.

From June 23-27 we fished the Pyta, Eager, Tod, Laurie system. Fishing was good and we landed, on average, about 100 fish per day, equally distributed between pike and trout, with maybe 60 walleyes thrown in as well. It was a very tough bite this year and we worked our butts off to find and catch fish, but I have to admit that we're spoiled as heck, and that our expectations are probably a bit too high. Maybe it's more of a sign of the tremendous respect we have for the fishery than anything.

I did bring back two trout this year. Typically we release all of the fish we catch, but I thought it might be fun to smoke a couple of those wonderful lakers and enjoy them this summer with my family here in MN.

As always, it was great to be in northern Manitoba and we had a very enjoyable trip.

Are you able to drive all the way to the Laurie river system? How are the roads getting up to Lynn Lake? I have always wanted to take a trip up there.
