Let me start by saying that back in December 2013 our group decided that for our 2014 trip to Reed we would stop shaving after December 31st. At the time it seemed like a good idea (may have been a few drinks involved). None of us had ever grown full beards so the result was rather interesting.

Our trip was scheduled to start May 26th and we were trying hard to keep up with ice conditions. We drive from Winnipeg for this trip and our holiday time needs to be booked well in advance. We had been looking at satellite photos daily and it looked like the ice was starting to come away from shore. Unfortunately the last few days before leaving, the satellite photos were obscured by cloud and we could not see what was going on. We decided to continue on with the trip and arrived at Reed Monday May 26th. Bad news as Reed was covered in ice as far out as we could see.

Tuesday did not look any better with the ice having blown in to shore so Randy and I drove to Wekusko Falls to check ice conditions. Apparently Reed was the only lake in the area still covered in ice.

Wednesday still no luck on Reed as all of the lakes ice was pushed into the bay where the boat launch is so we could not even fish from shore. We drove to Webster and caught trout almost 6" long.

Thursday we broke down camp and headed to Wekusko hoping to bring the boat back to Reed if the ice broke up. The Wekusko Falls campground was a refreshing change with hot showers and 2-ply toilet paper.

Saturday we drove back to Reed and spent a quality 3 hours fishing at our favourite spot. I think we boated approx. 20 Lakers and numerous other species but the three to four foot waves drove us back off the lake. We got to fish just long enough to remind us why we keep coming back each year. Stopped to see Dave and Kerry and then back to Wekusko for our last night in the north.

Heaviest fish caught by Jason during our 3 hours on the lake, then a short visit with friends Dave and Kerry before heading back to Wekusko and then home.

Reed Lake 2015 has got to be better. No beards this year.

The plan is to drive up on Tuesday May 26th staying until Sunday or Monday. I would guess that the ice will be long gone by then. I am thinking of possibly driving up on the long weekend for a couple days but not sure yet if I can make it happen. Don't tell the rest of the guys, ok. :D
