How much ice do you guys have in Thompson or further north?

Much snow?

Probably a little early to be thinking about ice out, but as the days get longer, it's hard not to....

Not soon enough lol we got loads of snow and 3 feet of ice temps above zero right now but nights still dropping double digits I’m hoping ice out May long weekend that is what I always wish for is open water for first day of opener :D

In general...or you can be specific, it certainly won't hurt my feelings...

Do you find the fishing to be "best" right after ice out, or a few weeks past?

As fishermen, the season opener is often more about getting out, dusting off the gear, putting the boat in the water. The weather RARELY cooperates. Often rain, and even snow, is on the menu for the weekend. Heaven forbid you sleep in a tent, for fear of freezing your fingers off (the least of your worries regarding what is set to fall off!).

Personally, I can be found on a lake "somewhere" for opening day, but it's usually memorable for things other than the fishing.

Would love to hear about your thoughts.

T minus 64 days until opening day....May 19.

Good post, it depends what species your fishing for I find opener in May is generally not good for Walleye fishing, Pike is hit or miss but lake trout fishing is awesome, so for me opener is me targeting lake trout, rainbow trout and Pike, Walleye are usually better come June. I can’t wait to head out Laker fishing! :)

Some nice weather FINALLY out west here. Ice around here is burning off quick. All southern lakes are now open/ice free. Didn't take long at all.

Little different in Alberta's north, but word is that lakes are open around the edges, with the middle sections starting to rot.

Sounds like the May long weekend will be hit and miss up your way?

Don't know yet if we'll be up there or not...we had drink after drink tonight trying to figure it out but didn't arrive at any conclusion...after being iced in for almost our whole week a few years ago and looking at the satellite photo's right now we are not sure if we want to take the risk...we will be fishing somewhere, just not sure where.

May long is your only option for fishing? Last year was one of our best years for trout hoping for another banner year

We have from the 25th until the 1st. In looking at today's satellite image, the ice should be gone by the 25th...maybe.

I was their I remember we were able to get the boat out the week before and fish Labelles we came back the following week and ice blew in and then had to wait was a crazy year, others that showed up didn’t believe us that we had the boat out the week before until I showed pictures. It’s warming up I doubt it will be one of those years, oh yes the year of the beards lol if you make it up who’s coming?

It would be the regular crew...it should be warm enough over the next two weeks to melt the ice in time for our trip but who knows with this crazy weather...it was 31°C here in Winnipeg on Monday and now as I write this it is currently -7°C both here and in Thompson.
